Meet Your New Go-To Chenille Alternative

Meet Your New Go-To Chenille Alternative

We are excited to introduce Elle Shh’nille, our fresh take on chenille yarn — beautifully textured, visually unique, and made with makers in mind.
What makes this yarn launch even more special is that Shh’nille is proudly the first locally produced chenille yarn in South Africa. From sourcing raw materials locally to dyeing the yarn in-house at Saprotex, Shh’nille represents a new chapter in South African yarn innovation and crafting creativity.

Why Shh’nille?

Over the last few years, chenille yarn for amigurumi and plush crafting has become increasingly popular amongst crocheters and knitters. While there are already chenille yarns available, we wanted to create something that is local and has more texture, depth, and is more visually interesting once worked up.

What Makes Shh’nille Different?

At first glance, Elle Shh’nille offers everything you would expect from a chenille yarn. But what makes this yarn stand out is that it is triple twisted, creating a mottled texture running through it. Unlike traditional chenille yarns that appear flat or solid in colour, this mottled effect gives finished projects depth and character.

the Details Behind the Yarn

Shh’nille is made using multiple chenille ends combined together, creating a fuller aran-weight thickness that works up quickly while adding incredible dimension to every stitch.
By twisting multiple chenille ends together, the durability and strength of our Shh’nille yarn thread is superior to other chenille yarns with a single end, making it especially suitable for toys, décor, and statement crochet pieces.
So, whether you’re creating playful amigurumi characters, chunky accessories, or textured homeware, this yarn brings character, volume, and value together in one beautiful ball.

The Colour Palette Inspiration

Although the range currently launches in a carefully selected palette of just eight shades — White, Ivory, Taupe, Chocolate, Gold, Seafoam, Silver and Black — these colours were intentionally chosen for their versatility and timeless appeal.

Rather than focusing on bright novelty tones, this collection leans into a more modern, neutral aesthetic that suits today’s trending handmade décor, collectible plushies, and sophisticated toy designs. The earthy and muted palette works beautifully for creating woodland creatures, teddy bears, bunnies, dinosaurs, highland cows, and character dolls with a more natural, premium-inspired finish.

These shades also pair effortlessly together, allowing makers to mix and match for depth and contrast while still maintaining a cohesive look across collections. Beyond toys, the colour range transitions seamlessly into home décor and lifestyle projects, making the yarn ideal for crafters who want one versatile chenille alternative that can move from amigurumi to cushions, baskets, blankets, and accessories with ease.

Design Inspiration

Rather than creating an entirely separate pattern collection for this yarn, we’ve designed it to work beautifully with many of our existing aran-weight patterns, making it easy for makers to start creating straight away using designs they already know and love.

Its unique twisted chenille construction gives familiar patterns a completely fresh texture and appearance, adding extra depth and character to every project. To help you explore the yarn’s potential, we’ve also included four easy starter patterns that showcase its texture, structure, and versatility across a range of creative projects.
